Supported versions indicate that ENVI was either built on (the lowest version listed) or tested on that version. You can install and run ENVI on other versions that are binary-compatible with those listed.

ENVI Classic is also supported on Solaris 10 SPARC 64-bit systems.

The 64-bit Windows installer contains 32-bit binaries so that you can launch ENVI in 32-bit mode on 64-bit Windows systems. This ensures interoperability with ArcGIS?«. You can find the 32-bit versions of ENVI in the Windows Start menu under Programs > ENVI 5.4 > ENVI for ArcGIS?« and Programs > ENVI 5.4 > Tools > ENVI Classic 5.4 (32-bit).

An X-Windows manager is required for Macintosh. ENVI was tested using XQuartz 2.7.11.

For optimal performance, your video card should have a minimum of 1 GB RAM and should support OpenGL 2.0 or later. Also be sure to install the latest drivers for your video card.

ENVI Help requires an HTML5-compatible browser.

New Features in ENVI

This software release includes the new and enhanced features listed below.

Installation and Licensing

ENVI licensing is now managed through a third-party solution from Flexera Software. You obtain the license through a portal hosted by Flexera, then you can choose to activate the license on a license server or on an individual node-locked machine. Details about ENVI licensing are documented in a standalone topic outside of this Help.

By default, ENVI installs under a Harris directory. It was previously Exelis:

Windows: C:\Program Files\Harris\ENVI54
Linux: /usr/local/harris/envi54
Macintosh: /Applications/harris/envi54
ENVI and IDL have separate installers. If IDL and ENVI are both installed on the same system, the Help application contains the help for both products.

Supported Data Types

ENVI supports the following sensors and data types:

Use File > Open to open MODIS (HDF-EOS), ASTER (HDF-EOS), and EO-1 ALI and Hyperion (HDF4) files. In previous versions, you had to use the File > Open As > Optical Sensors > sensor type menu option.

Dataset Browser

The Dataset Browser was redesigned to let you easily build new ENVI rasters that contain a combination of scientific data, attributes, and latitude/longitude information from HDF and NetCDF files. Use the File > Open As > Scientific Formats > format menu option to access the Dataset Browser. Here are some other updates:

The Dataset Browser user interface has new icons to simplify the process of building new rasters.
You can map attributes from the source dataset to standard ENVI header fields.
You can add standard ENVI header fields to the new raster with known metadata values.
You can add VData fields from HDF4 files to the new raster. Each raster can only have one VData field. You cannot combine VData fields with other datasets.
You can select latitude and longitude datasets from the source file and add them to a Geographic Information folder in the Raster Builder. When you display the raster, ENVI georeferences the raster on-the-fly in the Image window, using the latitude and longitude information. It does not actually geocorrect the dataset.
You can create a report of the data fields and metadata that comprise a raster. The available formats are text, XML, or JSON. With HDF4 files, JSON is the only available option.
ENVI programmers can manually create XML templates for reading data in HDF4 and NetCDF-3 datasets. Previously, templates only worked with HDF5 and NetCDF-4 datasets. Templates are helpful in building the same raster and metadata structure from several scientific data formats. Using a template prevents you from having to use the Dataset Browser to re-define the raster and metadata for every file. See the "Open Scientific Data Formats" topic in ENVI Help for more information.
Image Processing

The Generate Point Clouds and DSM by Dense Image Matching tool will now generate digital surface models (DSMs) in TIFF format, in addition to point clouds. This tool is part of the ENVI Photogrammetry Module and requires a separate license and installation of that module. This tool runs on Windows 64-bit platforms only.

Use the RPC Orthorectification Using DSM from Dense Image Matching tool to perform RPC orthorectification using a digital surface model (DSM). The DSM is generated from two or more images taken from different view points. It is used as the terrain source to orthorectify the first raster in the input rasters. This tool is part of the ENVI Photogrammetry Module and requires a separate license and installation of that module. This tool runs on Windows 64-bit platforms only.

The RPC Orthorectification Using Reference Image tool was updated to include a new parameter: Output Pixel Size in the X and Y direction, in meters. The default value is derived from the pixel size of the input image.

Use the Edit Classification Image tool to reassign classes in classification images. You can also use this tool with the results of viewshed analysis or thematic change detection.

The Color Point Cloud tool uses red/green/blue (RGB) data from a raster to colorize a LAS file of the same location. Each point of the point cloud receives the RGB value of the raster pixel that has the same location.

The Image Registration workflow has been updated as follows:

The base image and warp image are displayed using side-by-side views instead of separate windows.
New buttons and controls are provided for reviewing and managing tie points.
A new Predict Warp Location option is available. When you click on a feature point in the base image and this option is enabled, ENVI will use an image-matching technique to try to find the corresponding location in the warp image. This prevents you from having to manually select tie points in both images.
Use the Dice Raster tools to separate a raster into tiles based on tile count, distance, pixel count, or a vector shapefile. The Dice Raster tools are in the ENVI Toolbox under Raster Management > Raster Dicer.

The Calculate Cloud Mask Using Fmask tool was redesigned and simplified from the previous version. You no longer have to calibrate the imagery or create a layer stack before adding the imagery to the tool. It automatically calibrates the imagery and determines the appropriate multispectral, thermal, and cirrus bands to use in creating a cloud mask. It currently supports the following sensors:

Landsat 4-5 TM
Landsat 7 ETM+
Landsat 8
Sentinel-2 Level-1C
NPP VIIRS Moderate Resolution (750 m) reflectance and brightness temperature SDR data downloaded from NOAA CLASS (HDF5 format)
The Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI) was updated to use any green band ranging from 0.5 to 0.6 ?Ám. The NDSI is based on the following references:

Hall, D., G. Riggs, and V. Salomonson. "Development of Methods for Mapping Global Snow Cover Using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer Data." Remote Sensing of Environment 54, No. 2 (1995): 127-140.
Salomonson, V., and I. Appel. "Estimating Fractional Snow Cover from MODIS Using the Normalized Difference Snow Index." Remote Sensing of Environment 89 (2004): 351-360.


The new ENVI classification framework provides a powerful and flexible way to classify data. You can create and train a classifier on one dataset and apply it to a similar dataset. Traditionally, classifiers are tied to one data source. With the new framework, you can train and evaluate the performance of a classifier once and apply it anywhere, including desktop or enterprise environments. Currently, the classification framework uses the ENVI application programming interface (API).

Here are some of the new features included in the classification framework:

Softmax Regression classifier: Softmax is a generalization of logistic regression that is used for multi-class classification where classes are mutually exclusive. An example is classifying a satellite image into four different classes such as cloud, water, asphalt, and vegetation.
Iterative and Gradient Descent trainers: These algorithms minimize classification error by iteratively reducing a loss function until it converges on a minimum value.
Evaluate a classifier: New API routines are available to compute a confusion matrix and accuracy metrics. Once you train and evaluate a classifier, you can save the classifier to an IDL save file and use it to classify other similar datasets.
New tutorials: "Classification Tutorial 1: Create an Attribute Image" describes how to create an image that consists of different attributes, which typically improves classification results. "Classification Tutorial 2: Collect Training Data" shows how to interactively define regions of interest (ROIs) that represent known land-cover types. The ROIs serve as ground truth data for supervised classification.

Stretch Types and Histograms

Several updates were made to the ENVI stretch and histogram manipulation tools:

When you click the new Stretch on View Extent with auto update button, the selected stretch type automatically updates as you pan around the image.
The Custom Stretch dialog was renamed to Histogram Stretch. It allows better control with red/green/blue histograms (for color images) or with greyscale histograms. You can adjust the minimum and maximum values of the histograms as well as the number of bins.
The Contrast control works in conjunction with Linear, Equalization, Gaussian, Square Root, and Logarithmic stretch types.
In previous versions, the stretch type changed to Custom when you adjusted the Contrast setting. The Custom option has since been removed from the Stretch Types drop-down list.
The Brightness and Contrast controls are enabled when the Custom Histogram Stretch dialog is displayed. As you adjust the Contrast setting, both the minimum and maximum histogram points adjust accordingly in the Custom Histogram Stretch dialog (for red, green, and blue).
Bipolar Stretch is a new option for the Stretch Types drop-down list.

Viewshed Analysis

The Viewshed Analysis workflow and the corresponding API routine (ENVIViewshedRasterTask) were updated with new observer view constraints such as horizontal and vertical field of view, azimuth, and pitch. When combined with range and observer height (which were already in ENVI), these view constraints can more accurately model line-of-sight analyses.

ENVI now uses the Izraelevitz (2003) algorithm for viewshed analysis, which is an extension to the original Xdraw algorithm developed by Franklin et al. (1994). The Izraelevitz algorithm performs well in densely sampled terrain elevation models, and it is significantly faster than the radial interpolation method used in previous versions of ENVI.

The Viewshed Analysis tutorial uses new data files to show different ways to determine visibility from multiple view sources.

Display Tools

You can affix certain annotation items to the display so that they remain stationary while you zoom, pan, and rotate. These are called on-the-glass annotations, and they include text, symbols, classification legends, color bars, and scale bars.

The Create Pyramid if None Exists preference was changed to a drop-down list with more options. It offers better flexibility in choosing whether or not to create pyramid files with datasets that have a large number of bands (such as hyperspectral imagery).

Use the Icon Size preference to adjust the size of icons in the ENVI application. If it is set to Automatic (default), ENVI checks your system's default font size and resizes icons accordingly. Other choices are as follows:

Original - 100%: Icons display at their original size.
Medium - 140%: Icons display at 140% of their original size.
You can add four new annotation types to the Image window view. These options are available from the Annotations drop-down menu in the toolbar:

Legends for classification images
Scale bars for georeferenced images
Color bars for single-band greyscale images with color tables applied
Grid lines for georeferenced images
The Description and/or the Coordinates string from the Feature Counting Tool table now display in the view.

If any layer in a view has a standard, RPC, or pseudo spatial reference, you can change the base projection of the view to any supported map projection. Right-click on the View layer in the Layer Manager and select Change Base Projection, then use the Select Coordinate System dialog to choose a projection.

If a view contains a standard, RPC, or pseudo projection, you can overlay grid lines in that view by clicking the Grid Lines button in the ENVI toolbar.

JPG2000 and NITF C8/M8 compressed rasters display and process faster.


A new "Custom Tasks" tutorial shows how to write a custom task that creates vegetation indices from Sentinel-2A Level-1C imagery. New example files are provided with the tutorial in the /examples/tasks/sentinelexample folder of the ENVI installation path.

Use the envitaskengine executable to run ENVITasks in command-line environments. You can now plug ENVI analytics into applications in different programming languages or environments that share information. The environments must be able to handle standard streams (stdin, stdout, and stderr).

Dehydrate and Hydrate methods were added to all virtual rasters and data type objects.

If you create a custom task that displays a dialog for selecting parameters for an ENVITask or custom API script, you can include a style sheet to define the individual user interface (UI) elements. Examples of UI elements include file selection boxes, color pickers, and text boxes.

The ENVIGLTRasterSpatialRef routine now acts as a constructor function, allowing you to create a new geographic lookup table (GLT) spatial reference in the ENVI API. You can then open an ENVIRaster using the GLT spatial reference. See the ENVIGLTRasterSpatialRef help topic for details.

What is the new licensing system?

The release of ENVI 5.4 and IDL 8.6 introduces a new & modern license management technology that simplifies the software license workflow. The Harris Download and License Center is the new portal where you download your new ENVI and IDL software and manage your licenses:

Once you complete the software installation, you are prompted to activate the software so you can use it immediately. You will no longer need to supply a host ID and wait for a license file from Technical Support.

The new portal provides access to the portal 24 hours per day, 7 days per week to manage, activate & deactivate your licenses.

What will it change for my existing licenses?

With new licensing, the user chooses whether to activate the license as a node-locked (local computer) or server-based (floating) license. Server licenses require the use of new license server software that is available with the download files. (The license server binaries are no longer included in the product download by default)

The new licensing system is also not dependent on a single OS platform: each license can be activated on supported Windows, Mac, or Linux machines.

The new license technology is based on a concurrent instance license. It is no longer based on tokens. The specific quantity of concurrent instances of the software you can launch depends on the software products and modules that you have purchased as well as the activation mode you decide to use.

ENVI : 2 concurrent sessions can be started with a node-locked license and 1 with a server license
IDL : 4  concurrent sessions can be started with a node-locked license and 1 with a server license

What are the requirements of the new licensing system?

The license activation is an online process that requires an internet connection. Please contact technical support if you do not have internet access.
Administrator permissions are required to install and license a product.

Below is a link to the current supported platforms and features for served/floating licenses. Note that Mac machines are no longer supported as a license server but are still supported with node locked licenses.   

The license server is configured to communicate on local TCP/IP port 7070. If a firewall is deployed on the license server, you will need to configure the firewall to allow inbound connections by the license server machine on TCP port 7070.
What is the workflow for the new licensing system?

If you are registered as a license administrator of Harris licenses:
You will receive an initial Welcome email asking you to login and create a password on the Harris Download and License Center. Note that this portal is different from the previous web licensing portal so you would need to create a new account even if you already have a working web account on the current Harris website and licensing portal.
You will also receive a second email, called an Order email, that includes the activation code(s) corresponding to your licenses: these are the codes you will use to activate/license the software after installation.

On the Download and License Center portal, you will navigate to the download file section, select the appropriate software version links, download and install the software. If you plan to install a license server you would also need to download and install the license server separately.

At the end of the software installation, you will be prompted to run the Harris License Administrator to license the software. Follow the licensing instructions and supply your activation code(s) from the Order email. The software is now licensed for use.

If needed, license administrators can access additional information for installation and licensing on the download and license center.

If you are a user (not Administrator) of Harris licenses:
You will need to contact your license administrator to request the activation code(s) as well as the installation package and instructions.

What is the Harris License Administrator tool and how to use it?

The license administrator Tool is a GUI to help you activate/deactivate/manage your licenses.
To open the Harris License Administrator tool, use one of the following:
Windows: From the Start menu, select Tools > Harris License Administrator under the shortcut group for your product installation. Administrator privileges are required.
Linux: From a terminal window, launch the harrislicense command from the INSTALL_DIR/envixx/idlxx/bin directory. Sudo or root permissions are required.
Mac: From a Finder window, double-click the icon located under the INSTALL_DIR/envixx/idlxx directory. Administrator privileges are required.

Is the new licensing system compatible with the previous one?

Prior versions of ENVI and IDL (IDL 8.5 and ENVI 5.3 and earlier) will continue to work with their existing license system (i.e. a license.dat file).
Previous and new versions of the software can coexist as well as the 2 licensing systems which means you can keep your current license.dat file even if you activate your licenses for the new version of the software.
License server for previous versions can also coexist with the new server for the new versions of the software.
New license activation codes however are not backwardly compatible with current prior versions of ENVI and IDL.
How to download a product with the new system?

Note: The download pages on the Harris Geospatial website will no longer be available. To request a software version prior to IDL 8.6 and ENVI 5.4, please contact Technical Support.

As a license administrator:
Download the software from the Download and Licensing Center using your web account.  License administrators will need to store and share the installer internally on a non public server for end-users.

As a license user:   
Contact your license administrator to download the product from a shared location.

How to license a product with the new system?

As a license administrator:
Use the activation codes you received by email to activate the licenses on each machine: the Administrator will need to run the activation process from each end user machine, with an internet connection.
Share the activation codes with the end users so they can run the activation by themselves, from their machine with an internet connection (recommended).

As a license user:   
Contact your license administrator to obtain the activation codes for your product(s).

How to setup a license server?
A served license requires a separate download and installation of the license server binaries.  The link below points to the license server Installation and Licensing instructions for Windows and Linux (MAC servers are not supported):

How to connect a client machine to a license server?
The configuration of the client machine to point to a license server can be done from the Harris License Administrator tool by using the option Use License Server. For detailed instructions see the links under setting up a license server as they contain detailed instructions on connecting as well.

How to check which products are licensed on my machine?
Users can easily check the list of activated products including the name of the product as well as the activation code(s) from the Harris License Administrator tool using the View Licenses option. The Show feature details checkbox lists the feature name, version, expiration date, number of available and used licenses for each activation code.
Additional online documentation is available to license administrators on the D&LC.

How to re-host/transfer a license to a new machine using the new licensing system?
Each license user can easily activate and return/deactivate a license from the Harris Licensing Administrator tool available with the software, assuming the license(s) are current on maintenance. Returning/Deactivating a license will return it to the licensing pool so it can be reactivated on a different machine. This is equivalent to the current rehosting/license transfer process.
After a deactivation, the returned license can be reactivated as a fixed or served license, on any type of supported platform (Win, Mac, Linux).

What to do if my machine is not connected to the network?
If you do not have internet access at all and are on a "dark machine", please contact Technical Support to activate your license.

Can we borrow a license in the new system?
There is an option to Borrow licenses (for a duration of 7 days) from a license server. It is available in the Harris License Administrator tool as well as from the command line. Detailed instructions can be obtained by the license administrator on the D&LC.
If you need to borrow a license for a longer period, you can return/deactivate a seat of the served license and reactivate it as a node-locked license on the appropriate machine.

Can we create an option file for a license server in the new system?
The option to reserve some licenses on a server for specific use is not yet available. It should be developed in a future version.
If you need to reserve some licenses for specific use, consider activating a pool of licenses on different servers or activate some licenses as node-locked instead of server-based as needed.

Παραθέτουμε παρακάτω μερικά (αλλά υπερβολικά χρήσιμα) από τα πάρα πολλά υπάρχοντα και χρήσιμα πρόσθετα προγράμματα (plugins) για το QGIS τα οποία προσθέτουν από απλή, αλλά χρήσιμη λειτουργικότητα στο περιβάλλον εργασίας του, μέχρι εξειδικευμένες δυνατότητες, που πολλές φορές σκοπίμως ή λόγω άγνοιας πολλοί αναφέρουν το ArcGIS "ως το μόνο που το κάνει" ... Τα κείμενα ενσωματώνονται από τα μητρικό site των plugins και για το λόγο  είναι στην Αγγλική.

Build soil texture map from sand and clay raster maps.

A collection of QGIS vector layer operation plugins

3. LecoS - Landscape Ecology Statistics
Contains several analytical functions for land cover analysis. LecoS is based on metrics taken from FRAGSTATS.

Tools to capture and zoom to coordinates using standard decimal or DMS (latitude,longitude) notation.

5. RiverGIS
RiverGIS is a QGIS plugin for creating HEC-RAS flow model geometry from spatial data. The functionality is similar to that of HEC-GeoRAS. For data store and spatial operations it needs a PostGIS database.

6. Semi-Automatic Classification Plugin for QGIS.
The Semi-Automatic Classification Plugin (SCP) is a free open source plugin for QGIS that allows for the semi-automatic classification (also supervised classification) of remote sensing images. Also, it provides several tools for the pre processing of images, the post processing of classifications, and the raster calculation.

Στην έκδοση 15.10 δεν υπάρχει στα repos όποτε την κατεβάζετε από το
και η εγκατάσταση γίνεται με dpkg --install libxp6_1.0.2-2_amd64.deb

2. Μεταφορά και μετονομασία της άδειας που πιθανόν έχετε.
Εαν απλά αναζητήσετε αρχεία τύπου .lic θα βρείτε το φάκελο που πρέπει να πάει η άδεια οπότε κάνετε,
cp License.dat /usr/local/exelis/license/License.lic

Πρώτα πρέπει να γίνει η εγκατάσταση της R την κάνετε κατεβάζοντας το εκτελέσιμο από το site τους,

Αφού γίνει η εγκατάσταση σε φακέλους που θα υποδείξετε (καλύτερα να αφήνονται τα default), θα ακολουθηθεί η διαδικασία του ορισμού των φακέλων μέσω του menu processing -> options -> providers και θα οριστούν οι φάκελοι / paths.

Σε μία τυπική εγκατάσταση με τα defaults της R 3.2.4 για windows  έχουμε τις παρακάτω ρυθμίσεις.

Activate -> Yes
R Scripts folder -> c:\users\geo\.qgis2\processing\rscripts
R Folder -> c:\Program Files\R\R-3.2.4revised
R user library folder -> c:\users\geo\Ruserlibrary
Use 64 bit version -> Yes

όπου το C:\Users\geo\Ruserlibrary το φτιάξαμε εμείς για να είναι writable και θα το γράψει κατά την εκτέλεση της η R.

Σε μία οποιαδήποτε standalone εγκατάσταση του QGIS, συμπεριλαμβάνεται και το GRASS. Εαν κάνετε εγκατάσταση με χρήση του OSGeo4W, συμπεριλαμβάτε και το GRASS.

Αν είστε σίγουροι ότι το GRASS συμπεριλαμβάνεται στην εγκατάσταση, φροντίστε τα αρχεία δεδομένων που θέλετε να επεξεργαστείτε με τους αλγόριθμους του GRASS να βρίσκονται σε "εύκολα folders"

Π.χ. , εύκολο folder "c:\users\myuser\project\anlysis1\image1.tif", δύσκολο folder "c:\Users\ΔΗΜΗΤΡΗΣ\ ΠΕΡΙΒΑΛΛΟΝΤΙΚΕΣ ΜΕΛΕΤΕΣ\ΠΕΡΙΦΕΡΕΙΑ ΝΟΤΙΟΥ ΑΓΑΙΟΥ\λατομειο ιωάννου\image1.tif"

Στην δεύτερη περίπτωση  του "δύσκολου folder" πιθανότατα θα σταματήσει με σφάλμα η Python.

Παρόλο που στα tools εμφανίζεται το orfeo toolbox το πιο πιθανό είναι να μην είναι εγκατεστημένο.
Συνήθως όταν η εγκατάσταση του QGIS γίνεται από το standalone αρχείο των 200-300 mb, δεν συμπεριλαμβάνεται το orfeo toolbox.
Κατά συνέπεια, πρέπει να γίνει επιπλέον εγκατάσταση του ofreo toolbox για να είναι δυνατή η εκτέλεση των εντολών.

Η διαδικασία έχει ως εξής:

Από το site του QGIS κατεβάζετε το OSGeo4W setup (32 ή 64bit ανάλογα το λειτουργικό σας σύστημα).
Το εκτελείτε ακολουθώντας στο περιβάλλον εγκατάστασης τις παρακάτω επιλογές.

Advanced Install->Install from internet -> Μην αλλάζετε root directory (C:\OSGeo4W) / All users -> Μην αλλάζετε και το local Package Directory -> Direct Connection -> Καμία αλλαγή στο download site ->

-> Στο περιβάλλον Select Packages κάντε κλικ στο "σταυρό" των Libs (στην ουσία πηγαίνετε στις διαθέσιμες βιβλιοθήκες / αλγόριθμους) για να ξεδιπλωθεί η λίστα με τους διαθέσιμους αλγόριθμους για εγκατάσταση.

Από την λίστα επιλέγετε το "otb-bin: Orfeo Toolbox application modules." Βρίσκεται σχεδόν στο μέσο τη λίστας. -> Στη συνέχεια θα ενημερωθείτε ότι χρειάζονται και άλλα συνδεόμενα/εξαρτόμενα αρχεία, για τα οποία θα συμφωνήσετε να "κατέβουν"

Θα ακολουθήσει η διαδικασία της μεταφόρτωσης και μετά από αυτή, η διαδικασία της εγκατάστασης. Μετά το μήνυμα "Installation comlete" πατήστε "finish" να ολοκληρωθεί η διαδικασία.

Στη συνέχεια και για να είναι δυνατή η χρήση των βιβλιοθηκών αφού εκτελέσουμε το QGIS κάνουμε την παρακάτω διαδικασία.

Ακολουθούμε τα menu -> Processing -> Options -> Providers -> Orfeo Toolbox -> Activate
και στην συνέχεια επιλέγουμε σαν application folder και σαν command folders τα παρακάτω paths (πατώντας το "...." περιηγηθείτε στους φακέλους όπως έχουν εγκατασταθεί στον Η/Υ):


Στην συνέχεια θα είναι δυνατή η χρήση των βιβλιοθηκών.
